South America Map Quiz — FAQ
There are 12 sovereign countries in South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. French Guiana is sometimes included but is an overseas territory of France, not an independent nation.
Brazil is by far the largest country in South America, covering about 8.5 million km² — nearly half the continent's total area. It is also the fifth-largest country in the world and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
La Paz, Bolivia, is often called the world's highest capital city, sitting at approximately 3,640 meters (11,942 feet) above sea level. However, Sucre is Bolivia's constitutional capital — La Paz serves as the seat of government. Either way, Bolivia holds the record for the highest-altitude capital.
The Andes is the world's longest continental mountain range, stretching approximately 7,000 km (4,350 miles) along the western coast of South America. It passes through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
The Amazon River originates in the Andes mountains of Peru (near the Nevado Mismi peak) and flows eastward through Brazil before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil contains about 60% of the Amazon rainforest, the world's largest tropical rainforest.
